Your photos stay on your device

Image Compressor reduces the file size of JPEG, PNG and WebP images on your own device — to a target size you type in kilobytes, or to a quality you choose — for one image or a batch at once. That single job is everything the extension does. Your images are processed in your browser and never uploaded: there is no server of ours for them to go to, and there is no account to create.

What stays on your device

  • The images you choose. You add them with the file picker, a folder, drag and drop, or paste. They are decoded and re-encoded in memory for the job you started. No image bytes, pixel data or thumbnails are written to browser storage, and nothing is uploaded.
  • Folders you drop. Only each image's own file name is used, so that results can be told apart. The path to the file, and the name of the folder it sits in, are not read and not kept.
  • The results. Your smaller images are written straight to your own disk by the browser download — one file, or a ZIP when you compress several. They do not pass through anything of ours.
  • What the extension tells you — the size it achieved, the smallest size it could reach, the colour it used where transparency had to be filled in — is shown on screen for that job and is not saved.

What happens to the information inside a photo

Photos usually carry hidden details written by the camera (EXIF, XMP and IPTC data), which can include the place the picture was taken, and a colour profile. You choose what happens to them, and your choice is applied to your own file:

  • Remove it all (the default) — nothing hidden is carried into the image you receive, including any location your camera recorded. EXIF, GPS, XMP, ICC, IPTC (APP13) and JPEG COM are dropped. Remove it all: orientation is applied to the pixels, the tag is dropped.
  • Keep everything — the camera's Exif block is put back into a JPEG or PNG result, GPS included. IPTC (APP13), JPEG COM, XMP and ICC colour profiles are dropped. A WebP result carries no metadata at all. Keep: on the passthrough path, pixels and the orientation tag are untouched; lossless PNG optimisation keeps the pixels and the Orientation tag as they are (the file is only re-compressed); when the image is re-encoded (Target, Quality, or Lossless), the orientation is applied to the pixels, the Orientation tag becomes 1, and the other kept EXIF values (GPS, dates, camera) are copied. Choose this only when you want the Exif kept.

Whichever you choose, those values are read out of your own file and written back into your own file. They are never saved by the extension, never put into a log, an error message or a file name, and never sent anywhere.

Settings we remember

The extension keeps one small group of values in the browser's own extension storage, on this device:

  • the last target size in kilobytes (targetKb);
  • the last quality (quality);
  • the last output format (outputFormat);
  • the last choice of what to do with the hidden details in a photo (metadata);
  • the rate-prompt record: the timestamps of each showing (shownAt), an optional time it was dismissed (dismissedAt), and an optional verdict (rated).

Those values live under exactly two names in the browser's extension storage, and there is no third: imageCompressorPrefs holds the settings above, and imageCompressorRatePrompt holds the rate-prompt record (shownAt, dismissedAt, rated). You can open the extension's storage in your browser and check for yourself that nothing else is there.

Nothing else is kept: no image bytes, no pixel data, no thumbnails, no file names, no image dimensions, no camera or location values, no colour profiles, no record of the sizes you achieved, and no list or count of the images you have compressed. For the current browsing session only, the browser also remembers which tab the extension is open in, so that clicking the icon returns you to it instead of opening another. To change a setting, use the control — it overwrites the value it remembers. To delete them all, remove the extension: uninstalling deletes everything it stored.

The only pages this extension opens

  • The welcome page you see after installing is part of the extension itself. It is not a website, it carries no analytics and no counters of any kind, and nothing about your images reaches it.
  • An optional feedback form on removal. When you remove the extension, Chrome may open a short form in a new tab, if one has been set up for this version. Answering is entirely optional. The address carries no parameters and nothing from your work — no file names, no sizes, no settings. The form is a Google Form, hosted by Google LLC under Google's own privacy policy; we receive only what you choose to type into it.
  • A feedback link inside the extension, when one is present and you use it, opens the same kind of Google Form in a new tab, again with nothing attached to the address.
  • The rating line under a finished result, if you click a star. One, two or three stars open a private Google Form in a new tab, so that you can say what went wrong without it becoming a public review. Four or five stars open this extension's own reviews page on the Chrome Web Store, run by Google LLC under Google's own privacy policy. Nothing opens until you click a star, neither address carries any parameter or anything from your work, and while the extension has no published store listing yet the four- and five-star branch has no page to open and tells you so instead.

Those are the only pages the extension opens, and the only route by which anything can reach anyone other than you.

Legal bases

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we handle data on the basis of your consent and to perform the feature you asked for — your image is read only in order to produce the smaller image you asked for, because that is the job you started. You can withdraw consent at any time by stopping the job or removing the extension.

Retention and deletion

  • Your images and their pixels: only for as long as the job runs. Gone when it finishes, fails or is cancelled, and when you close the tab.
  • Camera details, location values and colour profiles: held only while that one image is being processed, then dropped. They are never written anywhere by the extension.
  • File names, dimensions, achieved sizes: not retained at all.
  • The settings listed above: until you change them or remove the extension.
  • Images you saved: yours, on your own disk, for as long as you keep them.
  • On our side: nothing. We never receive any of it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal data:

  • GDPR / UK GDPR: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, withdrawing consent, and lodging a complaint with a supervisory authority (such as the ICO).
  • CCPA / CPRA (California): to know, access, delete and correct your data, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. We do not sell or share your personal information.

Because everything stays on your own device, you can exercise most of these yourself: your images are in front of you, your settings are the controls you last used, and removing the extension erases everything it stored. Security

Your images are handled inside your browser by the extension's own code, in the same browser process as the page you are looking at. They are not sent to us, and there are no third-party processors: no cloud service, no analytics provider and no error-reporting service receives any part of them. Every encoder the extension uses is packaged inside the extension itself, so no code is fetched from the internet while it runs. Your images are protected by your own device and browser profile, the same way the rest of your files are.

Children

Image Compressor is intended for users 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

What we do not do

  • No accounts, no sign-up, no subscription.
  • No advertising and no ad networks.
  • No analytics, no tracking, no profiles.
  • No history of the images you have compressed.
  • No access to the websites you visit: the extension has no host permissions and injects nothing into any page.
  • We do not sell or share your data. We never receive it in the first place.
  • All features in this version are free; this extension does not offer purchases.

Limited Use

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Changes to this policy

This policy takes effect on 3 September 2026. What changed: this is the first published version of this policy, written for the first release of the extension. If it changes, we will update the date at the bottom of this page, and the current version always lives here.
